It’s a simple phrase, but for those of us in Catholic education, it carries a depth that speaks directly to this Year of Jubilee and our call to be Pilgrims of Hope.

Teaching is a vocation filled with both beauty and challenge. We’ve all experienced moments that left us weary, seasons of change that tested our resolve, and the temptation to glance behind us, wondering if things were somehow easier before. Yet the message of Jubilee invites us to release what is past and to step forward renewed. In Scripture, the Jubilee Year was a time of freedom and restoration: debts forgiven, relationships healed, lives made new. It was a sacred invitation to start again.

In our schools, that same invitation echoes today. Don’t look back at what didn’t work, at mistakes or disappointments, or at the comfort of old ways that no longer serve our mission. The Spirit calls us onward, urging us to notice what God is already doing among us: to see the signs of hope growing quietly in our classrooms, our staffrooms, and our communities.

As Pilgrims of Hope, we’re reminded that we are not tourists wandering through our vocation, collecting moments. Pilgrims walk with purpose. They move forward in faith, trusting that the journey itself transforms them. For teachers and educators, this means bringing energy and courage to the everyday work of formation – creating spaces where faith and learning intertwine, where students are known and loved, and where the Gospel is not just taught but lived.

Hope, after all, is not passive optimism. It is the conviction that God’s promises still hold. It is the quiet strength to believe that even small acts of kindness and persistence make a difference. Every time we choose to encourage rather than criticise, to listen rather than rush, to pray rather than despair, we embody that hope. We become witnesses to resurrection in ordinary ways.

This Jubilee Year offers us a beautiful moment to begin again – to reimagine what our Catholic schools can be, to rediscover the joy that first drew us to this vocation, and to recommit ourselves to walking together in faith. The past has shaped us, yes, but it does not define the path ahead.

So as you stand at the classroom door, remember the words: don’t look back … you’re not going that way. Step forward with confidence, with compassion, and with the hope that Christ places within you. The journey continues, and it is rich with promise. The best is not behind us. It lies ahead, waiting to be discovered by those who walk together as true Pilgrims of Hope.
