As Catholic educators in Australia, we begin each school day in peace. We greet our students under clear skies. We teach in safe classrooms. Our children play at recess without fear. And yet, we are painfully aware that across the world – in Ukraine, in Russia, in Gaza, in Israel, and in many hidden corners of the globe – children wake to the sound of sirens, to fractured lives and uncertain futures.
It’s easy to feel helpless. But the Gospel calls us to something deeper: hope grounded in truth, peace grounded in Christ, and a commitment to live and teach as Pilgrims of Hope – especially when the world is in turmoil.
A Global Classroom, A Global Heart
In today’s interconnected world, our classrooms are not untouched by global conflict. Our students hear the news. They scroll images of devastation. Some have family overseas, or carry generational trauma from conflict in other lands.
As educators, we have a sacred opportunity: not just to inform, but to form. We teach more than history or current events – we shape hearts for compassion, justice, and reconciliation. We show our young people that peace is not passive. It is a holy act. It is something we build, one respectful conversation, one prayer, one restored relationship at a time.
The Jubilee Call: Forgiveness, Freedom, and Fresh Starts
In the face of war and division, the Church now invites us to something radically countercultural: the Year of Jubilee, and its call to renewal, justice, and mercy. In Scripture, the Jubilee was a time when captives are released, debts forgiven, and land restored – a sacred “reset” for God’s people. How desperately our world needs a jubilee now.
As Catholic educators, we carry this spirit into our schools. We model forgiveness. We create space for healing. We invite our students to see that even in a broken world, new beginnings are always possible.
We Are Pilgrims of Hope
The road to peace can feel long. But we do not walk it alone. The theme of the Jubilee Year – Pilgrims of Hope – reminds us that hope is a journey. Pilgrims don’t wait for conditions to be perfect before they set out. They walk in faith. They carry light through the darkness.
Every lesson in empathy, every liturgy for peace, every act of welcome to the stranger – these are steps on that pilgrimage. We’re not just teaching young people about hope – we are teaching them to live it.
Lighting Candles in the Darkness
In the face of war, it’s tempting to curse the darkness. But Catholic educators are candle-lighters. We proclaim, with quiet conviction, that peace is possible. That God is still at work. That the resurrection is stronger than the cross.
Let your classroom be a sanctuary of peace. Pray with your students for those caught in conflict. Teach about global justice. Model active hope. Speak to the dignity of every person – Israeli and Palestinian, Ukrainian and Russian, friend and enemy alike.
In a world longing for peace, let our schools be places that dare to hope, boldly and prayerfully.
